Meet the Team – Atul Kumar

One of the most exciting things about being a startup is building a team with diverse experiences and perspectives, all working toward the same goal. Over the next while, we’ll be introducing you to more of our team at Ground Truth Ag, continuing with Grain Data Collector Atul Kumar.

From Agribusiness to Grain Grading

Atul’s path to Ground Truth Ag is rooted in a strong foundation in agriculture. With a background in agricultural engineering and further studies in agribusiness management and food processing in Canada, he has spent years building hands-on experience across the grain industry.

Before joining Ground Truth Ag, Atul worked in grain handling and operations, where he was responsible for grading, inventory management, and working directly with farmers. That experience gave him a clear understanding of how grain moves through the system and the importance of accurate, reliable grading.

“When I saw this opportunity, it really interested me,” Atul says. “It connects with my background, but also gives me a chance to keep learning and growing.”

What He Does

As a Grain Data Collector, Atul works across both lab and annotation environments, helping capture and analyse the data that supports Ground Truth Ag’s AI models. His work includes collecting NIR measurements, annotating grain samples, and contributing to ongoing model development.

He is currently leading work on canola annotation, while also supporting wheat classes like CWRS and CWAD. His background in grading allows him to quickly identify characteristics and contribute to improving model accuracy.

But the role goes beyond just one task. “Every day is different,” he explains. “You might be working with samples, solving a problem on the benchtop, or learning something new from the team.”

What He Enjoys Most

For Atul, the biggest draw is the opportunity to learn across different areas of the business. Coming from a more traditional grain background, he values being able to expand his knowledge into new crops, technologies, and systems.

“In my previous roles, I focused on a few crops,” he says. “Here, I’m learning about soybeans, peas, and more. You’re constantly building your knowledge.”

He also highlights the collaborative environment. With team members coming from different backgrounds, there is always an opportunity to ask questions, share knowledge, and solve problems together.

Looking Ahead

Atul is focused on growing alongside the company. As Ground Truth Ag continues to develop and expand, he sees strong potential not just for the technology, but for his own learning and development within it.

“This is a place where you can grow,” he says. “There’s always something new to learn, and I want to keep improving every day.”

Outside the Office

When he’s not working with grain samples or annotations, Atul spends his time reading, learning about financial markets, and exploring new skills. He has a strong interest in stock trading and personal development, often reading books like Atomic Habits and Rich Dad Poor Dad

He’s also recently taken on learning French, adding to the languages he already speaks, including Hindi, Punjabi, and English.

One Thing You Might Not Know

Atul is known among friends for being easy-going and full of energy, but there’s more beneath the surface. “People think I’m not serious,” he says with a smile. “But I’m very focused on my goals and my future.”

He also has a creative side. During his time in school, he performed in skits and dance performances, something he hopes to explore again in the future.

We’re glad to have Atul on the team, bringing both experience and curiosity as we continue building the future of grain grading.
