Harvest Is Over. But the Samples Keep Coming.

For farmers, the combines are parked and another harvest is in the books. But at grain elevators and receiving facilities, there’s still plenty of work ahead. Trucks are arriving. Samples are being collected. Grain is being graded. And somewhere in the middle of it all, someone is trying to keep everything moving.  Welcome to a day in the life of a grain grader.

One Sample After Another

Every load of grain has a story to tell. Where did it come from? What’s its grade? What’s the moisture or protein content? Are there signs of damage or disease? For grain graders, answering these questions is part of the daily routine. A sample arrives, and the process begins. Depending on the grain type, there’s dockage to assess, kernels to examine, grading factors to identify, and results to record.

Then comes the next sample. And the next.  While the work might seem repetitive, the grain certainly isn’t. Quality can vary between farms, fields, and even truckloads from the same producer. That means every sample deserves the same attention, whether it’s the first one of the morning or the last one of a busy day.

What if Grading Could Take Just a Few Minutes?

That’s where our benchtop MV/NIRS comes in. Pour in a grain sample, and the benchtop automatically analyses visual grading factors using machine vision and non-visual characteristics, such as moisture and protein, using near-infrared spectroscopy. In three minutes or less, graders receive comprehensive grain quality results. It’s designed to help teams work through samples more efficiently while delivering accurate, consistent results.

And when there are plenty of samples waiting, those minutes matter.

Keeping Grain Moving

Grain grading is about more than assigning a number. The results help grain buyers understand what they’re receiving, determine how grain should be handled, and make decisions about storage, blending, and marketing. When those results are available sooner, teams have the information they need to make decisions and keep operations moving. Harvest might be over, but grain doesn’t stop moving once it leaves the field. And neither does the work of the people grading it.
