Over the next while, we will be introducing you to more of our team at Ground Truth Ag, continuing with our Senior Machine Learning Engineer Dr. Syed Aamir Ali Shah.
Meet Dr. Aamir
“Ground Truth has been doing some awesome work,” Aamir explains when asked what first interested him in a job with the Regina-based start-up company. “One day I got a call from Divyesh, inviting me on a tour to share information on what they were planning to do – and I found it super interesting and decided to join.”
Aamir’s doctorate is in electronics system engineering where he worked on EEG signals using machine learning and deep learning for deep brain stimulation optimization. During his post doctorate he brought his machine learning and deep learning expertise to agriculture technology.
What Aamir enjoys most about his work at Ground Truth is the amount of problem-solving involved with machine learning based on computer vision. “Our job is to look at images and then come up with computer algorithms that will then tell us what we see in the images - it sounds simple but it’s very challenging,” he explains. “I love solving problems. Whenever I have a new problem to solve - that keeps me running.”
When not busy problem-solving in the office, Aamir is home enjoying family time with his wife and 18-month-old daughter. “While I do love to watch movies and TV shows with my wife, my daughter dictates what we do in the house. If she wants to play, we’re not doing anything else,” Aamir laughs. “We love to play with her.”
Aamir and his wife are both big fans of Marvel and DC movies and TV shows and love both superhero universes equally but mentions one of his favourite streaming series right now is Suits.
When asked to name one thing that might surprise people to learn about him, Aamir answers that it’s his open nature. “I’ve been told that when people meet me for the first time, I seem like a closed person. Once they get to know me, they learn I joke a lot.”
