One of the most exciting things about being a startup is building our team - drawing together our inner circle to help us realize our vision and grow our company and culture. Over the next while, we will be introducing you to more of our team at Ground Truth Ag, continuing with our Analytical Chemist Mariia Selivanova.
“When I found the posting on Indeed.com from Ground Truth looking for an analytical chemist, I was really excited because that’s exactly what I wanted to do,” Mariia explains. “Especially living in Regina and in Saskatchewan, agriculture is a really fast-growing industry - it’s the place that I want to grow professionally and build my career.”
What Mariia enjoys most about her work are the opportunities it provides for creativity. “It’s a mix of both data analysis and research - I like when it’s combined. Sometimes I’ll do data analysis and sometimes I’ll do some literature research or find or set up an experiment I’ve never done. I like the creativity that I get here.”
One of the best examples of creative problem solving has been Mariia’s work in setting up and calibrating the system that will be in the Ground Truth Ag product. “You find ways to make it work - you can’t just simply buy something commercially available but instead have to creatively get the same result as you would with a commercially available set up.”
Outside of the office, Mariia loves yoga, hiking, spending time with her Australian Shepherd puppy and camping and hiking with her partner.
“I think yoga is just the best way for me to relax emotionally and physically. It’s a mind-body exercise where I can really reconnect with myself and you have just a whole hour to yourself. That’s where I really don’t think about chemistry,” Mariia laughs.
Mariia and her partner have taken multiple trips to explore the BC interior, visiting Golden, Revelstoke, Nelson, Slocan Valley and Valhalla Provincial Park. “We love camping. We did so much hiking and exploring. It was just so awesome. Backpacking is very tough – I did it once and it’s a really unique experience but it was amazing to just sleep on top of the mountain.”
